Cops: We will make curfew arrests in First Precinct
People will be arrested if they break the dusk-to-dawn curfew in Sandy-stricken areas in the First Precinct, Suffolk police said.
The curfew, set Thursday by Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, bars motorists and pedestrians from areas south of Montauk Highway in Babylon Village, Lindenhurst and Copiague due to the flooding and power outages. Montauk Highway will remain open.
Those arrested would be charged with breaking an executive order, a misdemeanor, police said.
An extra 25 patrols will be assigned to the area during the curfew period, police said.
While no widespread looting has occurred, police said, the number of burglaries in parts of the First Precinct shot up on Monday, when Sandy arrived, and Tuesday, when the storm's winds were starting to die down.
Schaffer and police want to deter any looting, scams and gawkers who may bring more distress to already-suffering homeowners.
Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman had also set a 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew daily, saying it was for residents' protection.
