A Farmingville woman, who Suffolk County police said was driving westbound in the eastbound lane of Express Drive South in Medford, was arrested Monday and charged with driving while impaired by drugs, while she had her 11-year-old nephew in the car.

At 11:18 a.m. Karen Kregel, 44, driving a 2004 Honda Accord, was pulled over after Officer Thomas Wilson observed the car traveling the wrong way, then making a U-turn and causing another vehicle to swerve out of the way, police said. The woman's nephew was not injured and was released to the care of a family member, police said.

Kregel, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child under age 16, which is a felony under Leandra's Law. She was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and other traffic violations.

She is to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
