A Hampton Bays man was drunk late Thursday when he was driving the wrong way on State Route 27 in Southampton, State Police said.

Troopers on patrol from the Riverside Station spotted a red sport utility vehicle driving the wrong way on State Route 27 near North Road at about 10:43 p.m.

They stopped the vehicle and noticed driver John Ryan, 58, with "obvious signs of intoxication," according to a news release.

Ryan failed sobriety tests and provided a breath-analyzer reading of 0.15 percent, troopers said.

Ryan is charged with DWI and traffic violations and is scheduled to appear May 21 in Southampton Town Court.
