A Wyandanch man was arrested Saturday for shooting a Virginia man in the face on June 1 in a dispute over a woman, Suffolk police said.
Maurice A. Carman, 26, of North 17th Street, Wyandanch, shot and seriously injured William Royal Jones, 29, of Newport News, Va., said Det. Sgt. Kevin Naylor of the Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives. He is charged with first-degree assault and criminal use of a firearm.
Jones remains in serious but stable condition at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, police said. The bullet, which lodged in Jones' jaw, passed through his left hand and nicked his spinal cord, possibly causing permanent injury, they said.
Early on the morning of June 1, Carman and Jones had an argument over the woman, and Carman grabbed a gun and fired, police said. The shooting occurred near Jones' home. The weapon has not been recovered, Naylor said.
Police received a 911 call at about 12:50 a.m. Shortly after, an anonymous 911 caller reported a man had been shot in the face and was being driven to a hospital.
Carman was awaiting arraignment Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip.
