Coram woman in surgery after Mt. Sinai hit-run
A Coram woman was in brain surgery Sunday night after a car slammed into her Sunday morning while she was jogging near her home, police and family said.
Police are looking for the driver of the tan midsized car that hit Karen Benjamin, 56, on Canal Road west of Mount Sinai/Coram Road in Mt. Sinai around 11 a.m. The driver fled the scene.
"They left her on the road to die," said Benjamin's daughter, Lindsay Benjamin, 25, of Manhattan, speaking by cellphone from Stony Brook Medical Center, where she said her mother, a nurse assistant, was being treated.
"I would like to see justice," Lindsay Benjamin said.
Lindsay Benjamin said her mother also had extensive injuries to her legs and back.
She described her mother as a devoted runner who had participated in the Long Island and New York City marathons.
Karen Benjamin was not carrying identification when she was struck but was identified after worried family members called police and area hospitals.
Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. Calls will be kept confidential.
