Couple seeks owner of lost wedding band before anniversary

A Riverhead couple is hoping to return a lost wedding ring by next week, ahead of the one-year anniversary inscribed inside the band.

In April, Steve Tooker, 64, was shopping with his girlfriend, Darleen Gibbs, 52, at the Tanger Outlets in Riverhead when they found in the food court a gold band embedded with small diamonds. The ring had three letters inscribed in it, along with a date, Aug. 28, 2016, which Tooker believes represents an anniversary.

Tooker and Gibbs said they alerted employees at the shopping center’s lost and found that they had found the ring and left their contact information. They also tried to reunite the ring with its owner by posting about it on Facebook at the time. But Tooker said he never received any response. Now, he has decided to renew his efforts as the anniversary neared.

“My girlfriend and I are just romantics that way,” Tooker said. “We’re thinking somebody’s in a lot of trouble, losing their ring in the first year that they’re married. So we’d love to get it back to them before their anniversary.”
