Woman airlifted, man taken to hospital after crash on Route 110, authorities say

Two people were rushed to hospitals after a car crash that left much of the vehicle in pieces on a major road in Melville on Wednesday night, authorities said.

A Nissan Altima struck a tree on southbound Route 110, between Spagnoli and Ruland roads, said Steve Silverman, spokesman for the Melville Fire Department, which sent about 25 members to the scene.

Suffolk police said the crash happened about 8 p.m.

The passenger, a woman, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries, while the driver, a man, had minor injuries and was taken by the fire department’s rescue squad to another hospital, Silverman said.

Southbound Route 110 remained shut in the area at 11 p.m. as detectives gathered information and investigators took measurements and photos of the crash scene.

Tiny bits of metal and glass littered a long stretch of the road, and other parts of the vehicle could be seen in the parking lot of an adjacent shopping center.
