A pregnant woman was seriously injured in a car crash Friday afternoon in Copiague and had to undergo emergency surgery to deliver her baby, police said.

Suffolk County Police said Dianela Tavares was driving a 1994 Honda Accord northbound on Dixon Avenue at 31st Street when a 1997 Honda Civic, operated by Yennis Alvarado, attempting to make a left turn onto southbound Dixon Avenue from 31st Street, collided with the Honda Accord at about 4:40 p.m.

Alvarado, 27, of Washington Avenue, Amityville, who was eight months' pregnant, was taken by Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. Alvarado sustained internal bleeding and a broken pelvis, and she underwent emergency surgery to deliver her baby. Alvarado and her infant were listed in serious condition early Saturday.

Tavares, 24, of 34th Street, Copiague, and a female passenger in her car, were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip by Copiague Rescue, and both women were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A male passenger in Alvarado's vehicle was uninjured.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
