An Amityville woman who rear-ended a Dodge Durango died and a mother and her 6-month-old son were hurt in a two-vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway in Copiague Thursday, Suffolk police said.

Carolyn Merhige, 83, was driving a 2019 Subaru Cross Trek east on Sunrise Highway when she was evidently stricken with a medical emergency at about 10:50 a.m. and hit a Dodge Durango stopped for a red light at the New Highway intersection, police said.

Merhige was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said.

The driver of the Durango, Demetria Susajlo, 30, of Lindenhurst, sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries. Her 6-month-old son also sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The safety of both vehicles is being checked. Any witnesses should call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
