A Bohemia man died after he appeared to suffer a medical emergency while driving on Sunrise Highway in East Patchogue and crashed into a guard rail Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk police said.
David Redlo, 58, was driving a 2008 Mazda on westbound Sunrise Highway near Exit 51 when his vehicle veered and struck a guard rail at 1:30 p.m., police said. No other vehicles were involved.
Redlo was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
Detectives investigating the crash believe Redlo suffered a medical event prior to the crash. The vehicle is being impounded for a safety check.
Police had closed westbound Sunrise Highway at Exit 51 to investigate the crash, but it reopened shortly before 4 p.m.
