Sunrise Highway has reopened following a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday that seriously injured a motorcyclist, Suffolk police said.

The crash occurred when a 1996 Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck the rear driver's side of a mini bus in the eastbound lanes of the highway west of Smithtown Avenue in Sayville around 1:05 p.m., according to a Suffolk County Police Department news release.

The motorcyclist, Mark Pizzo, 56, of Lake Ronkonkoma, "was thrown from the motorcycle" and sustained "serious physical injuries," police said in the release. Pizzo was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue for treatment.

Neither the driver nor the sole passenger onboard the mini bus were injured in the collision, police said. Police impounded both vehicles for safety inspections.

Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
