Cutchogue fire official: Blaze burns 'through the roof'

Firefighters needed more than two hours early Wednesday to extinguish a house fire in a Cutchogue neighborhood, according to the Cutchogue Fire Department.

William Brewer, a first assistant chief with the Cutchogue Fire Department, said a call for a fire on Dean Drive came in at 12:18 a.m.

When firefighters arrived the house was engulfed by flames, with the fire "already burning through the roof of the home," Brewer said.

The house was not occupied at the time of the fire, which is not considered to be suspicious, Brewer said. The cause is being investigated by Suffolk County Police's Arson Squad, he said.

The Mattituck Fire Department assisted at the scene, as firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring houses, Brewer said.

The Southold Fire Department provided standby coverage, Brewer said.

No injuries were reported.
