An Amber Alert issued for a New Jersey man police said was suspected of stabbing to death his ex-wife was canceled Friday morning after police said the couple's two daughters were found safe in upstate New York.

Their father apparently killed himself, authorities said.

Officials said Anthony Trapp committed suicide in his room at the Bear Mountain Bridge Motel in Fort Montgomery, The Associated Press reported.

New York State Police said they found Trapp dead on a bed about an hour after the girls, ages 1 and 5, came out of the room on their own about 7:30 a.m. Friday, AP said.

New York police wouldn't say how Trapp died, but New Jersey authorities say he apparently killed himself, AP reported.

Police said the Amber Alert was issued after local police found Trapp's ex-wife, Heather, dead at their home in Old Bridge, N.J.

The alert was issued for New Jersey and New York, with the New York alert extending from Nassau and Suffolk to the Canadian border, police said.

Officials did not immediately say if they found Trapp through an Amber Alert tip.
