Gunman kills Huntington Station man expecting 1st child

A Huntington Station man expecting his first child was killed and another injured when an assailant fired shots at a group of people Wednesday night, authorities said.

Police said Thursday the shooting on East Ninth Street was reported in a 911 call at 9:35 p.m. Second Precinct officers responded and learned from witnesses that the shooter, a male, fired "a number of shots" at the group gathered outside the home -- then fired "two more shots" at the house before fleeing on foot south on Varney Avenue.

Daniel Carbajal, 25, was shot in the head and died at the scene. The second victim, Anthony Napolitano, 21, of Huntington Station, was taken by Huntington Community Ambulance to Huntington Hospital, where he was treated for a leg injury.

Carbajal's girlfriend, Claudia Vilorio, 28, said she was 10 weeks pregnant and that the couple had not yet notified relatives, opting instead to wait until she was four months into her pregnancy.

"He was just a happy, sweet, loving, caring person," Vilorio said, explaining that the couple's first anniversary would have been Sunday. "We clicked right away. He wasn't just my lover, he was my friend. He was just so full of happiness."

Fredis Carbajal, 52, the victim's father, sat outside his home surrounded by friends and family, at times cupping his tear-filled face with his hands as others consoled him.

"My son was marvelous," he said in Spanish. "I love him, he loved me and he loved his family. He had no vices. He worked six or seven days a week and he was very respectful to his elders. Only God knows who did this."

Vilorio said the last time she saw Carbajal was about an hour before he was killed.

"He came to my job. We had dinner together and then he said he was going to come home to sleep, but he stopped by Anthony's house," she said. "He had no enemies; this came out of nowhere."

Suffolk County police could not immediately say if the shooting was gang-related.

Relatives said they are at a loss as to what prompted the assailant to kill Carbajal, who worked with his father as a landscaper.

"The saddest part is that Danny is gone and we don't know what happened," said Vilorio's father, Abraham, explaining that he found out Thursday his daughter was expecting Carbajal's child.

"I told my daughter to take care of herself because she's carrying the memory of Danny."
