Deer Park man charged with DWI in fatal LIE accident
A Deer Park man was charged with driving while intoxicated Sunday in a crash that killed his passenger on the Long Island Expressway.
Police said Daniel Moreira, 27, was heading west on the expressway about 3:45 a.m. when he crashed his 2013 Toyota Corolla into the back of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck near the exit for Route 110 in Melville.
The crash killed Ismelda Rodriguez, 25, of Brentwood, who was declared dead at the scene.
Moreira was hospitalized at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said. He was arrested at the hospital and an arraignment has not been set.
The driver of the Tacoma, Terry Doughan, 60, of Kings Park, was not injured.
The crash investigation closed the westbound lanes for more than five hours, until the expressway was reopened about 9:30 a.m.
Police ask anyone with information to call 631-852-6555.
