Darryl St. George — and a Navy veteran raised in Northport who now teaches high school — announced he is running to be Huntington town supervisor on the Democratic line.

St. George, 34, lives in Centerport and is the current president of the Greenlawn Civic Association. He ran unsuccessfully for the Harborfields School Board in 2013, and considered a run for the town board in 2015. St. George said Wednesday he will bring fresh ideas and bold leadership in making local politics more inclusive.

“I want to get people involved in the political process,” St. George said Wednesday. “I don’t think we hear many of our elected officials talking about that.”

He said he has five key platform categories: Service, government that works, public safety, involving all stakeholders in growth and preservation decisions, and supporting our residents.

St. George said that although he is the first person to announce his candidacy for the November election, other Democrats may run and force a primary something he is prepared to be part of.

Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone said he will make his decision about running for re-election by the end of March.

Huntington Democratic leader Mary Collins said no decision has been made by party officials about who would run for Huntington supervisor.

“We are planning to start screening in a week or two,” Collins said. “He’s perfectly free to screen, and we’ll see how it goes,” she said of St. George.

St. George has a fundraiser set for March 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Northport American Legion.

“Service is at the heart of everything I do,” St. George said. “Professionally, personally, looking to benefit others and the good of the community, influencing me to becoming an educator. I’m ready to serve my community.”
