Swimming resumes at Davis Park Beach after shark sighting
Swimming resumed at Fire Island's Davis Park Beach on Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after a shark sighting prompted lifeguards to close the beach.
"Swimming is permitted at Davis Park today," said Jack Krieger, Town of Brookhaven spokesman.
A video shot on Wednesday by Liam Darrigo, 19, of Northport, shows the shark swimming about 20 feet offshore.
Last summer, several Long Island beaches, including Jones Beach State Park, had to be shut and then reopened after sharks were spotted too close to shore.
This summer that pattern appears to have continued.
A lifeguard was bitten on the hand and chest by a shark Sunday while training at nearby Smith Point County Park in Shirley. And a Jones Beach swimmer was bitten on the his right foot, possibly by a shark, on Friday.
