DEC reopens more shellfishing areas post-Sandy

The state Department of Environmental Conservation Tuesday reopened more certified shellfishing areas that had been closed because of water quality concerns related to superstorm Sandy.
The follow areas are now open to shellfish harvesting:
Babylon: All of Great South Bay, including tributaries, lying east of a line extending southeasterly from the southernmost tip of Bergen Point (also known as Fleet Point) to the eastern side of Nezeras Island (lying east of Fox Creek Channel) and continuing southeast across the state boat channel to Jones Island at the eastern side of Cedar Beach Park.
Islip: All of Great South Bay, including tributaries.
Brookhaven (South Shore): Great South Bay, including Nicoll, Patchogue and Bellport bays and their tributaries.
The following shellfish areas are closed through Thursday:
East Hampton: All of Accabonac Harbor.
Hempstead and Oyster Bay (South Shore): All of Hempstead Bay, East Bay and South Oyster Bay.
Babylon: All of Great South Bay lying westerly of Bergen Point.
DEC will continue to monitor closed areas and will reopen them as soon as possible.
