A badly decomposed corpse that authorities say was missing some body parts was found on an Amagansett beach Sunday, East Hampton Town police said.

A beach walker found the body between noon and 12:30 p.m. on a beach between Barnes Hole and Albert's Landing roads, said East Hampton Police Chief Ed Ecker.

After the Suffolk County medical examiner's office checked the body, county police homicide detectives began an investigation, Ecker said.

But he cautioned that their involvement did not necessarily indicate foul play.

"It would be premature to say that," he said.

East Hampton police divers searched Gardiners Bay Sunday for the missing body parts, Ecker said.

"It's in a poor state of decomposition," Ecker said of the body, adding he did not know if it was of a male or female.

Ecker said he knew of no open missing persons cases in the town that could be connected to the body.
