A predawn fog that made the morning commute hazardous has given way to brightening skies, but here's the bad news: Forecasters say more rain - and even snow - will fall Tuesday in Nassau and Suffolk, and wind chills Tuesday night and Wednesday morning will make it feel as cold as 5 below zero.

Brrrrrrrrrrr.

Northwest winds Tuesday afternoon will increase from a gentle 6 to 9 mph to 25 to 30 mph late in the afternoon, with gusts of up to 45 mph, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Wind chills will range from 5 degrees to minus 5 between early evening and dawn Wednesday, depending on where you are in Nassau and Suffolk.

Frigid overnight temperatures could create black ice late Tuesday and early Wednesday as well.

Early Tuesday, fog posed the biggest risk, causing blind spots on some roads. In a special weather statement issued at 5:24 a.m., the service warned of reduced visibility and areas of dense fog. Unseasonably high temperatures hovered in the 40-degree range.

Forecasters said that after the incoming cold front pushed out the fog, Long Islanders could expect rain and snow.
