Details of the Suffolk Police Arbitration Award
Term: 2008 to 2010
Raises: 3.5 percent increase annually, raising the top step officer after six years to $108,608. Cost: $18.4 million, $12 million deferred to retirement
Canine benefit increases: $2,212 for home kennel construction and off-duty care and maintenance. Cost: $22,420
PBA officer stipend increase: weekly straight pay stipend doubles from 3.25 to 6.5 hours for PBA president and from 1.5 to 3 hours for four other top PBA officials. Cost: $37,000
Family Sick Days: increases the number of sick days that can be converted for use to care for immediate family from five to seven. No new cost.
Reopener: allows union to seek reopening of negotiations if there is overall change in terms and conditions for other bargaining units. Cost: unknown.
SAVINGS
Starting pay: reduced from $57,811 to $42,000 annually and evening out of step system. Savings: $1.7 million.
Deferral of longevity increase: $25 annual increase in longevity pay over three years, but it will not take effect until Jan. 2011. Savings: $1.4 million.
Line-of-duty injuries: ends accrual of sick and personal time, night differential, cleaning and clothing allowance while officers are out of work for line-of-duty injuries. It stops payment to those with such injuries for unused vacation days in excess of those allowed to be carried over. Savings: $850,000.
Sick leave management program: permits county to adopt program to curb abuse as it has done with other police unions. Savings: $850,000.
