A 12-year-old handicapped boy was killed when the van he was traveling in went out of control on the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood, crashed into a guardrail and overturned, police said Thursday.

Joseph Ferencsik, 12, of Holbrook, who was partially ejected from a rear window, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Robert Giffen, 42, of Holbrook, the boy's nurse and the driver of the van, was not injured, police said.

They were traveling east on the Motor Parkway exit in a 2000 Chevrolet van when the accident took place at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Third Squad detectives asked that anyone with information about the crash contact them at 631-854-8352.
