District: Students go to hospital after eating candy in school
Six Sachem North High School students were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital on Friday after eating a candy bar that was “prepackaged and labeled indicating it had marijuana in it,” school officials said.
The candy bar had been brought to the Lake Ronkonkoma school by a student, officials said.
“Shortly after students began to feel the effects of the food they were brought to the nurse’s office and then taken to the hospital,” according to a statement released by the Sachem administrative office. “Faculty and staff acted quickly with the health and safety of the students in mind.”
All of the students have since been released from the hospital, the district said late Friday afternoon.
Superintendent Kenneth Graham said in the statement the district is reviewing “the specifics of the situation and we will address it appropriately.”
“We take all situations involving drugs very seriously,” Graham said. “We educate our students on the dangers of illegal substances and will continue to work with our health department, substance abuse counselors, social workers, nurses, administrators and staff, as well as local health-care and law enforcement agencies, to address any issues related to drugs in our schools.”
