Diver accidentally shoots himself with spear gun, cops say

An 89-year-old diver accidentally shot himself in the stomach with his spear gun Monday in Hampton Bays after a fishing jaunt, Southampton Town police said.

Lewis Eastwood, of Riverhead, was putting the gun into the truck of his vehicle when it went off and the spear pierced about an inch into his flesh, Sgt. Herbert Johnson said.

Eastwood had been spear fishing under the Ponquogue Bridge, police said. He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for the non-life-threatening injury.
