A Dix Hills man was seriously injured early Sunday morning when his car hit a tree on a one-lane road that cuts through West Hills County Park in Melville, Suffolk police said.
Devin Wolcott, 24, apparently lost control of his 2010 Hyundai Elantra as he drove north on Sweet Hollow Road about 4:15 a.m. The car hit the tree about a half-mile south of Chichester Road, police said.
Wolcott, who was unconscious, was extricated from the wreckage with heavy-rescue equipment by the Melville Fire Department, and taken to Huntington Hospital with life-threatening injuries, including head injuries and numerous broken bones, police said.
Police said speed appeared to play a factor in the crash, which occurred on the narrow, winding tree-lined road.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. Calls will remain confidential.
