Darnell Anderson, 25, was "engaging in a speed contest," with his two young children in the car, on the westbound LIE at 2 a.m. Sunday with another man when a deputy sheriff spotted the pair and safely stopped both cars in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County sheriffs said. A man racing another vehicle at more than 100 mph on the Long Island Expressway with his two young children in the rear seat told the arresting officer, "I knew we were going way too fast," according to court documents.
The statement was made by Darnell Anderson, 25, of Central Islip, after his arrest, according to a criminal complaint filed in First District Court in Central Islip.
Anderson, who does not have a driver's license, and the driver of the other car, Darryl Squires, 30, of Bay Shore, hit speeds of 118 mph as they raced westbound on the LIE near Exit 60 at Ronkonkoma about 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the complaint by a Suffolk deputy sheriff.
The two men entered pleas of not guilty, a spokesman for District Attorney Thomas Spota said. Bail for Squires was set at $500 cash or $1,000 bond. Bail for Anderson was set at $1,000 cash or $1,000 bond.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office said Anderson's children, a 7-month-old daughter and a 3-year-old son, were turned over to a family member.
Anderson was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and engaging in an unlawful speed contest, along with multiple vehicle and traffic charges.
Squires was charged with driving while intoxicated, speeding, engaging in an unlawful speed contest, and multiple vehicle and traffic charges.
