Motorists in Port Jefferson face midday and nighttime lane closures as the state begins work Tuesday on the resurfacing of Route 25A/Main Street, officials said.

The work, between East Broadway and Hallock Avenue, will be done during the week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the state Department of Transportation said.

Officials said they would try to keep one lane open in each direction during the work, but it might be necessary to reduce that to a single lane at times, and alternating traffic.

There could be brief closings of all lanes as construction equipment is moved along the 1.4-mile stretch of the repaving project.
