A driver was severely injured after his car swerved off the road and hit several trees along the Northern State Parkway early Sunday morning, fire authorities said.

The driver, who was not named, was traveling eastbound between Deer Park Avenue and Commack Road at about 6:30 a.m. when his Honda Accord left the roadway and ran into the woods, said Tom Magno, first assistant chief of the Dix Hills Fire Department.

"We did see where he left the road and there were skid marks in the grass," Magno said. "The grass being wet probably didn't help either."

The driver was pinned in the car, Magno said. Rescue workers using heavy rescue equipment took 10 minutes to free him. There were no passengers.

He was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center with multiple traumatic injuries, Magno said.
