Suffolk County correction officer killed in Yaphank crash, Sheriff's Office says

A correction officer with the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office died Wednesday night after she lost control of a 2019 Ram truck and hit multiple obstacles, including large trees, in Yaphank, the Suffolk police and the sheriff's office said.

In a news release, the county sheriff's office said that Candice Ogiejko, 25, of Port Jefferson Station, was "one its newest" correction officers and had just completed her second year on the job.

In the release, Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. is quoted as saying: "The entire staff of the Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of Correction Officer Candice Ogiejko. Correction Officer Ogiejko was just 25 years old and had her entire life and career ahead of her. She will be greatly missed by her loving family, as well as her extended family in law enforcement."

On Wednesday night, Ogiejko had been driving north on County Road 101, when she veered toward the center grass median and overcorrected, according to a police news release.

The pickup she was driving skidded across the lanes, crashed into the northeast corner of Old Dock Road, and struck curbing, fencing and then the trees, according to the police.

The pickup finally stopped down an embankment near a parking lot at about 8:40 p.m., the police said.

Ogiejko was pronounced dead at the site, the police said.
