A driver was killed Monday morning when she apparently lost control of her car and crashed into a tree in Middle Island, Suffolk County police said.

Karen Hengstebeck, 46, of Rocky Point, was driving a 2004 Ford Focus north on County Road 21 just north of Route 25 at 6:20 a.m. when she lost control on the wet roadway, police said.

Hengstebeck was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information on the accident to call the Seventh Squad, 631-852-8752.
