Three people were injured, one seriously, in a head-on collision Sunday morning in Calverton, Riverhead police said.

The two-car crash occurred on Route 25, east of Edwards Avenue, at 10:40 a.m.

One of the drivers, Richard Matheson, 58, of Hauppauge, had to be extricated from his vehicle, a 2005 Jeep Laredo, and airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said. His condition was not known Monday.

Matheson and his wife, Jacqueline, 55, were traveling westbound on Route 25 when their Jeep was struck head-on by an eastbound 2010 Jeep Liberty driven by Emily Bongiorno, 19, of Mount Sinai, police said.

Jacqueline Matheson and Bongiorno were transported by the Riverhead Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Volunteers from the Riverhead and Wading River fire departments also responded to the scene. Police said no one has been charged in the incident and said the investigation is continuing Monday.
