An East Islip woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center late Wednesday night after police said she was struck on a street by a hit-and-run driver.

The accident occurred just after 10 p.m. on Connetquot Avenue in East Islip, Suffolk County police said. Detectives believe the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run suffered passenger-side damage -- and police said they are hopeful it will be found.

The victim, identified by police as Danielle Mazzarone, 28, suffered leg injuries and was listed in stable condition Thursday, police said. Police said Mazzarone had been helping a friend shift cars between a driveway and the street and was exiting a vehicle she had just parked when struck.

Friends who heard the crash rushed out to the street and found Mazzarone on the ground, police said. Police would not say if they had a witness' description of the vehicle that struck Mazzarone.

Police said that the vehicle that fled also struck the car Mazzarone had exited and investigators are sifting through evidence from the scene.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
