Two drivers were taken to the hospital Monday after their cars collided in North Amityville when one tried to make a left-hand turn, Suffolk police said.

Melchiore Cappadona, 81, was going northbound on Route 110 when he tried to turn into Francine Avenue and was hit by Indya Thornton, 26, who was driving an Acura southbound on Route 110, police said. The accident happened about 10:13 a.m., police said.

Both were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Cappadona, of North Amityville, was admitted with serious injuries, police said, while Thornton, also of North Amityville, was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Thornton was in good condition, according to a hospital spokesman. Information on Cappadona's condition was not immediately available.

Police impounded both cars for safety checks. First Squad detectives ask anyone with information to call 631-854-8152.
