If you’re a weary driver on Long Island, you take pleasure in the simplest of improvements.

Commuters took to social media this weekend to rejoice at the discovery that the Patchogue-Holbrook Road bridge over the Long Island Expressway had reopened.

Renovations to the bridge, which runs over the expressway near Exit 61, were initially slated to wrap up by May 2016 after a contract for the work was awarded in 2014, according to the New York State Department of Transportation website. The construction has caused lane closures and lane shifting. Social media erupted with cheers and jeers for the long-awaited reopening on Friday.

The $9.6-million project included the construction of a new structural bridge deck, roadway approaches, wider shoulder lanes, new sidewalk, improved traffic signals and new landscaping. The bridge was partially reopened Friday but construction won’t be completed until July 31, according to the DOT.
