A Flanders man drowned upstate on Saturday after he attempted to swim across the Delaware River, State Police said Tuesday.

Ricardo Ismalej Xujar, 47, had spent the holiday weekend with family and friends at the Landers Minisink Campground in the Town of Highland.

Xujar entered the river at about 1:30 p.m. and attempted to swim across it but became fatigued and went under the water and did not resurface, authorities said.

He was located around 6:43 p.m. and was pronounced dead by a Town of Highland Ambulance Paramedic.
