A man died Thursday after he was pulled out of the water by two women walking along the beach at Robert Moses State Park, authorities said Thursday.

The pair found the unconscious man about half a mile from an area monitored by lifeguards. One called 911 while the other performed CPR until parks police and other first responders arrived, said George Gorman, Long Island regional deputy director of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

The man, whose identity was still being confirmed, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, hospital spokesman Tim Kelchner said. His cause of death was not immediately known.

Cautioning that the details were still preliminary, Gorman said officials do not yet know whether the man, who was in his early 60s, had a heart attack or had tried and failed to swim to the shore.

“He was right where the water and sand meet,” Gorman said.

Park police are investigating.
