Suffolk police: 10 arrested at DWI checkpoints in pre-Memorial Day crackdown
Ten Long Islanders were arrested at DWI checkpoints late Friday night and Saturday morning in Patchogue and Holbrook and charged with driving while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, Suffolk police said.
The checkpoints, set up between 11:30 p.m. Friday and 4:30 a.m. Saturday, were part of a pre-Memorial Day crackdown on drunken drivers.
Suffolk's Highway Patrol Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team, assisted by officers from the county's parks police and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority police, arrested eight individuals on DWI charges. They are:
Douglas McCarthy, 26, of West Main Street in Patchogue
Rafael Tejada, 22, of Maplecrest Drive in Ronkonkoma
Stephanie Kawko, 22, of Cherry Lane in Medford
Enoel Cruz, 31, of Cadman Road in West Islip
Thomas Tortorici, 33, of Franklin Boulevard in Long Beach
Frank Montalvo, 44, of Mount White Avenue in Farmingville
Lance Martins, 31, of West 13th Street in Deer Park
Juan Campoverde, 37, of Academia Street in Patchogue
In addition, police arrested Jasheem Pulley, 19, of Silverpine Drive in Amityville. Pulley was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.
The tenth motorist arrested, Wilson Lopez, 18, of Vernon Street in Patchogue, was charged with driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of alcohol and drugs.
All 10 motorists were scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
