DWI, Leandra's Law charges for woman
A Sag Harbor woman who police said initially refused to comply with a traffic stop after an officer found her driving without headlights at 2:42 a.m. Wednesday in North Haven was arrested and charged with drunken driving under Leandra's Law after police found her 9-year-old daughter in the vehicle.
Southampton Town police said Theresa Lantiere, 49, also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Neither Lantiere nor her daughter were injured.
Police said officers attempted to stop Lantiere on Barclay Drive for operating the vehicle without headlights, but said she refused to comply at first.
When she finally did stop, Lantiere was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested, police said.
Leandra's Law is named for Leandra Rosado, who was 11 when she was killed in an accident on the Henry Hudson Parkway in 2009. Rosado was attending a sleepover party and the mother of one of her friends was driving a minivan drunk when it overturned -- killing the girl.
The law makes it an automatic felony, even on first offense, to drive drunk with a passenger under age 16 in the vehicle.
Arraignment details for Lantiere were not available.
