An East Quogue teen has been charged with assaulting another teen with a baseball bat during a fight that stemmed from a high-school football game, officials said Monday.

About 30 to 40 people were involved in the fight about 9:23 p.m. Friday on the grounds of the East Quogue Elementary School on Central Avenue in East Quogue, Southampton Town police said.

Westhampton High School had defeated Bellport 43-27 earlier in the day and the people involved in the fight were from the communities around those schools, police Sgt. Lisa Costa said.

"It goes back to tensions at the game," she said. "Words back and forth were exchanged. Then they agreed to meet up."

Wilson Antonio Garcia, 19, was charged with assault and other crimes after Jack Kochersberger, 17, of Bellport, was hit in the head with an aluminum baseball bat during the fight, she said.

The sergeant said Kochersberger was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, was later transferred to Stony Brook Hospital and was released Saturday.

Garcia was arrested at the scene. He was also charged with criminal mischief for hitting the victim's car, causing an estimated $6,500 in damage, the sergeant said.

He was released Saturday after posting $1,000 bail, she said.
