A 26-year-old East Northport man was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with fleeing the scene of a car accident that seriously injured a woman last fall in Greenlawn, Suffolk County police said.
Alvaro Alfaro, of 426 Fifth St., surrendered to Second Squad detectives at the Second Precinct on Park Avenue in Huntington at 8:15 a.m., police said.
He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, as well as with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and circumventing an interlock device. Police said the interlock device was a condition placed on Alfaro after a conviction for driving while intoxicated in 2011.
Police said Alfaro was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer south on Park Avenue in Greenlawn about 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 13 when his sport utility vehicle struck a 1998 Dodge Neon at the intersection of Park Avenue and Lantern Street. The driver of the Neon, Sulma Rivas, of Brentwood, was seriously injured.
A passenger, identified as Macia Castro, of Central Islip, suffered minor injuries.
The recovery status of both women is not known.
Police said Alfaro fled the scene on foot after the crash, but left behind a puppy. That puppy was not injured and was turned over to the Town of Huntington Animal Shelter.
Police could not immediately say Wednesday what evidence led investigators to Alfaro, who was ordered held on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond at his arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
