An elderly woman told police she stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake — and careened her 2021 Subaru Forester through the storefront of a business in an East Northport strip mall Monday.
Suffolk County police said the woman and her husband were transported to the hospital for evaluation and said no one inside the business was injured.
The crash took place at 11:30 a.m. and involved the ROM on the Run Physical Therapy center at 290 Larkfield Rd. Police said the Suffolk Fire Marshal's Office and building inspectors were working to determine if the building was structurally sound.
Additional details were still emerging, but photos from the scene showed the Subaru Forester inside the therapy center, balanced precariously on its two right-side tires. The storefront windows were gone and bricks from the facade were scattered about.
No one answered phone calls to the business and attempts to reach the owners at other listed numbers were unsuccessful.
A receptionist at the nearby H&R Block tax prep office in the mall, Sean Weidner, said, "We didn't even realize it happened until emergency vehicles started pulling up."
