An East Setauket bank was robbed Monday, prompting local school officials to begin a lockdown of school grounds.

A man handed a note to a teller at the Chase Branch at 4080 Nesconset Hwy., demanding cash and indicating he had a gun, police said. The teller complied with the demand and the man fled the bank on foot about 2:10 p.m., Suffolk police said.

After the alarm went out concerning the robbery, school officials at Ward Melville High School on Old Town Road in Setauket, decided to temporarily lock down their building as a precaution.

There were no reported injuries resulting from the robbery, police said.

Detectives said they are seeking a suspect in his early 40s, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a stocky build, and salt-and-pepper colored hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers, police said.

Detectives asked anyone with information about the robbery or suspect to contact them through Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
