Eastern Northport Bay reopened to shellfishing after raw sewage release, DEC says

Areas of eastern Northport Bay are to be reopened for shellfishing Friday at sunrise after being closed Tuesday as a result of the release of raw sewage into Northport Harbor, state officials said.

Water samples tested Wednesday indicated water quality "is suitable for the harvest of shellfish for human consumption," the state Department of Environmental Conservation said Thursday.

About 922 acres were closed temporarily after a broken pipe serving the Village of Northport's waste water treatment plant released untreated waste water into the harbor, the DEC said in a news release. The DEC also said the village reported that the pipe was repaired by 11 p.m. Tuesday.
