Elderly man dies after being found at the bottom of a backyard pool in Huntington Station

A 93-year-old man has died after he was found unresponsive in the bottom of a pool by a relative late Thursday afternoon, police said.

Suffolk police said they responded to a call at 5:25 p.m. that a man was drowning in a residential pool at 3 Stafford Drive in Huntington Station.

The Huntington Manor Fire Department was also on scene, said First Assistant Chief Frank McQuade, and volunteer firefighters pulled the victim, Curt Thiele, out of the bottom of the pool. First responders then administered CPR.

"We had a couple of members who live in the neighborhood who responded," McQuade said. He referred to it as an "echo call," meaning fire department members went straight to the scene instead of going to the fire house first, he said.

Police and fire officials said Thursday night they did not know whether the man experienced a medical emergency while swimming. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death, police said.

Thiele was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Suffolk homicide squad is investigating.
