A Farmingdale woman has been charged with a hate crime after, Suffolk police said, she left a racist phone message at an Amityville church.

Police said Elisa Pellino, 66, was arrested Thursday after the pastor of the New Hope Institutional Baptist Church on Harrison Ave. called the police to report a "racist and alarming" telephone message left at the church. Hate Crimes Unit detectives investigated and arrested Pellino at her home on Main Street at about 5:50 p.m., police said.

Pellino was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime and is being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct. She is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
