FAA reports weather-related flight delays
Wind gusts were delaying some incoming flights to LaGuardia Airport late Friday afternoon by close to an hour, the FAA said. With fog and rain added in, some morning arrivals had been delayed by more than two hours.
Wind gusts of 31 to 32 mph were reported at 4 p.m. at Laguardia and Kennedy airports, according to the National Weather Service.
Arrival delays at Kennedy and Long Island MacArthur airports were averaging about 15 minutes, with MacArthur also experiencing some 15-minute departure delays, the Federal Aviation Administration reported at its website, fly.faa.gov.
The site urged travelers to check with their airlines for specific delays.
At LaGuardia, some incoming flights were averaging delays of 59 minutes, the site said.
Some flights headed for Newark Liberty International Airport also were averaging delays of slightly more than two hours because of weather conditions, the FAA site said.
Weather forecasters said winds of 20 mph to 30 mph, with gusts of 40 mph to 45 mph, were expected to continue into the night.
Those winds should subside to 10 mph to 20 mph by midnight, forecasters said.
In a special weather statement, the Upton-based service said the high winds "could produce some downed tree limbs and power lines" and cause isolated power outages.
