Officials have notified the family of a Riverhead man who was struck by a car and killed Sunday while walking on Flanders Road in Riverside, Southampton Town Police said.

On Monday, a day after Diego Ajcuc-Zurdo, 40, was killed while walking in the roadway on Flanders Road near Enterprise Zone Drive, police issued a news release saying they were looking for someone who could help with contacting Ajcuc-Zurdo's next of kin.

Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said Southampton Town Police showed photographs of the victim to residents in several different neighborhoods and were able to find a cousin. The cousin said Ajcuc-Zurdo lived in Riverhead and has a wife and son in Chuarrancho, Guatemala.

Police said no criminal charges have been filed in the case.

Costa said Ajcuc-Zurdo was walking in the roadway in the dark, at about 8:30 p.m., and that the driver of the car, George Cast of Garden City, apparently was obeying all traffic laws.

Cast's car, a Mercedes, has been impounded for a safety check.

Anyone with information about the accident should call Southampton Town Police at 631-702-2230, or the department's tips hotline at 631-728-3454.
