Farmingville man arrested in Smithtown shootings
The man accused of shooting a pellet gun at passing cars from inside an apartment building across from Smithtown Town Hall was identified as Curtis Windheim, 24, of Farmingville, police said Wednesday.
Windheim was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 90 minutes after officers responded to a call of shots being fired from the second-story apartment on busy Main Street.
Police said Windheim shattered the window of one car and damaged another as he fired his pellet gun at two moving vehicles below on Main Street. No one was hurt.
Windheim was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He also was charged with resisting arrest after having a confrontation with police officers during the arrest, according to Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.
Nicole Danielo, 24, who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Her 20-month-old daughter, who was also in the apartment, was removed from the home by police, officials said.
Danielo was represented by Legal Aid at her arraignment Wednesday. Windheim was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center for evaluation and was not arraigned as of Wednesday afternoon.
A town park ranger was in the Town Hall parking lot when a woman drove up and told him that something had hit her car and that the front window had shattered. The ranger called police as he heard another shot ring out and saw a man with a rifle, hanging out of the window, according to the town's public safety office. Police were quickly on the scene and cordoned off the block surrounding the building where the shots were fired.
Smithtown fire marshals inspected the building around 11 a.m. Wednesday and found some code violations, including a missing fire alarm, the exit light not working and a handrail in disrepair, said Smithtown Chief Fire Marshal Richard McKay.
The owner of the building, Vincent Saltarelli, said he will fix the violations. He also said that Windheim was not named on the lease.
