Suffolk cops issue 58 tickets after car show, police say

Suffolk police issued 58 tickets for speeding and other reckless driving infractions on the Long Island Expressway following a Farmingville car show Sunday afternoon, police said.

Suffolk police put one of its helicopters in the air to coordinate its response with officers on the ground, as police began pulling over drivers beginning at about 2:30 p.m. on the westbound expressway between exits 61 and 48, police said.

Police began issuing the traffic summonses — for offenses such as speeding, tailgating, changing lanes without a signal and equipment violations — just as revelers began leaving the “March Madness 2K18” car show at the Pennysaver Amphitheater in Farmingville, police said.

None of the drivers, who police believe were attendees at the car show, were placed into police custody, police said.

Police also responded to a single-vehicle crash near Exit 62 on the westbound LIE at about 3 p.m. The vehicle struck a median, but no one was injured, police said.

The driver involved in the accident was issued a summons for having racing tires on his vehicle and an expired inspection sticker.

Organizers of the car show could not immediately be reached for comment.
