Suffolk County police were investigating a van fire Saturday evening that left a woman dead and a man injured.

Police responded at 6:15 p.m. Saturday to a 911 call about a vehicle fire on County Road 83 in Coram. Officers discovered a 2002 Ford Econoline van fully engulfed in flames, a news release said.

Police said Talal Saad, who was driving the vehicle, was able to escape the vehicle before officers arrived, but an adult female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Police were attempting to identify the woman.

Saad, 53, of Mount Sinai, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

A preliminary investigation by police found that the cause of the fire was noncriminal in nature. Police ask anyone with information to call homicide detectives at 631-852-6392.
